The Deer Cowrie makes a very good addition to your reef tank. It grows by increasing its swirling body while producing a protective shell to protect itself from predators. The Deer Cowrie is a great addition to large aquariums. It exhibits a foot pad, which it extends from its shell. The foot pad allows it to drag its shell along. At the time of dragging itself, its mouth and eyes come out of the shell. On frightening, its opening shuts down by operculum in order to protect itself from predation and acts like a door to the shell. The Deer Cowrie also features mantle which is like a cloak around the shell. When this mantle contracts, it forces water through the tubular siphon to propel itself rapidly through the water. The Deer Cowrie is considered reef-safe. It is an algae eater and a scavenger. A very hardy species, the Deer Cowrie is also considered a very good sand sifter, something that helps in aerating the tank. As it burrows, the Deer Cowrie cleans the sand and aerates the tank. It is sensitive to copper-based medications, and nitrite may prove lethal for this species. The Deer Cowrie thrives well in a temperature range of 72-78 degrees Fahrenheit, and pH of 8.10-8.40. It should be supplied with pieces of fresh fish and dried seaweeds, as well as high quality frozen foods, to supplement what it will feed on from the bottom of the tank.
